Tree Removal Services

Many trees can be saved through proper pruning and maintenance, but there are circumstances when removal is necessary. Hickory and A & J Tree Services can help you decide when or if your tree should be removed.

Tree removals are performed to remove dead or dying trees, or when they are considered a hazard. Sometimes trees are removed because of crowding, lack of space, damage to adjacent structures, or because they are located in an area, where new construction requires removal.

Damage may have been caused from pests penetrating and burrowing into the trunk of the tree. This may cause the roots of the tree to become damaged (rot)and nobody would have known.A tree can also starve itself due to lack of nutrients or sunlight.

Our goal in all of our tree service operations is to perform the job safely, efficiently, and provide thorough clean up with minimal impact to your property. Contact our trained specialist to receive honest, expert advice and get the attention the tree needs to thrive without removing it from the property. Our team is made up of highly skilled professionals, which are trained in the techniques of climbing and rigging, all with or without the use of a bucket truck or crane. Our climber has 38 + years of experience and his work is first class.

Customer service is very important to us. Let us know if there are any problems with your service and we will make sure the work is performed satisfactorily with the original estimate and work agreement.

Tree Pruning

Pruning a tree is selectively removing branches to improve the trees structure and allow for new healthy growth. This will increase their life span and prevents damage through the removal of undesirable branches.

Regardless if they are dead, weakened, diseased or insect-infested. Once the trees are manicured, you are setting a foundation for your landscaping to grow healthier and stronger.  There are many reasons to prune a mature tree.

Tree Risk & Hazard Assessment

Did you know...most trees that fall during a storm would have been identified as hazardous if they had been properly evaluated beforehand? Often the tree appears to be strong and stable to an inexperienced or untrained eye.

The best way to protect the value of your home and your landscape from storm damage is through proper year-round tree care. This will help prevent many avoidable situations.By protecting your investment,it will save you the cost and trouble of cleanup and repairs in the future.

Although it is difficult to protect trees from extreme weather conditions, there are effective precautions you and your arborist can take to minimize the impact. Our certified arborist will assure you that your tree is stable and growing correctly or guide you in the right direction to promote the health of your trees.

Seasonal Weather Effects on Trees

Extreme weather conditions can wreak havoc on your trees and shrubs. For example, the combination of hot, dry weather can lead to water loss causing stress. Freezing, damp conditions, if abruptly following mild weather, can cause significant stress to even the hardiest of species. Although you cannot prevent these conditions from occurring, there are precautions you can take to help safeguard your trees.

The following are a few weather conditions that can seriously affect your trees and tips to help you overcome their affects.

Effects of a Drought
A lack of rain can cause delicate root hairs, which are responsible for the uptake of moisture and nutrients from the soil, to die off. Without these, when rain finally does come, the tree will not be able to absorb the moisture and nutrients it so desperately needs to flourish. If treated promptly and correctly we can promote root growth and heighten stress tolerance so the damage can be reversed.

Weathering Wintered Weather:
Wind, rain, snow and ice can break or weaken trees potentially resulting in fallen or broken trees. Large trees, those in excess of 12" in diameter, are most likely to cause property damage, or even serious injury, if they fail so it’s especially important to keep these trees trimmed and maintained.

Tree Disease Prevention & Treatment:

Tree disease prevention starts with a comprehensive inspection of your landscaping. During this inspection, our team will be able to determine the overall health of your landscaping. We can recommend appropriate treatments, which can improve the condition of your trees and shrubs and preserve the vitality of your property.

Tree Disease Treatment:
Our programs are custom-designed for your property to maximize the health and beauty of your landscape by accounting for site-specific conditions. Tree disease treatment is only effective when targeted for type of tree, specific disease and desired outcome.

Hickory and A & J Tree Service has programs for all diseases that are designed to protect your valuable landscape. Most tree diseases are caused by fungi which thrive during moist, warm weather common at the start of the growing season. Properly timed disease treatments can prevent the production, growth and spread of spores that cause tree diseases.

Cabling and Bracing
Cabling and bracing is a supplemental support that will be installed once the trees structure has been evaluated by our certified arborist. To protect your trees from future spring and summer storms, we may recommend this service; this helps reduce strain and stress that may be caused by high winds or even lightening. Often times a tree may grow, that is unsafe or in a manner where it cannot support itself. It can possibly cause damage to itself, your property or even the neighbor’s property. The purpose of cabling is to prevent the tree or its branches from splitting and causing damage to any of the surrounding properties. We will give the homeowners a call, the following year to come out and inspect the system that was installed.

Have a hard to reach or a dangerous tree that requires total removal?

The professionals at Hickory and A & J Tree Services can utilize a crane service to safely remove the tree(s) from your premises. A crane allows the removal to be efficient and safe, for all involved. This process starts by finding the appropriate location for the crane, where the ground is level and accommodate the outriggers.

During the removal, the limbs are cut by the climber and attached to the boom, where they are lowered to the ground crew. They will either chip the wood or load onto a truck with a skid steer and remove from the property.

Our certified arborist is also a certified crane operator and has over 20 years utilizing this technique. Our team can remove even the most stubborn of trees and root systems from your property.

Stump Grinding

We know that cutting down and removing a tree is only half of a removal job. Here at Hickory and A & J Services, we provide the option for stump grinding on every site, so that the stump is physically below the soil line and finally, out of site…out of mind!!

Leaving a stump behind can be an eyesore as well as being in the way of new construction. Having the stump ground down will improve the overall appearance of your landscaping.

The machine we use will grind and shred the stump into mulch and chips that will be used to settle on the patch. The stump will be ground 4-6 inches below ground surface and ready for new growth. It is easy to install turf or new trees and shrubs, you will never know it existed.

Here are a few common tree diseases in our area

Fruit Trees
There are many diseases affecting fruit trees. Although they vary by host and life cycle, the treatments are usually very similar. Blights, scabs, rots, leaf spots and rusts all occur on species of apple, pear, cherry, peach, nectarine and plum. These fruit tree diseases can affect leaves, stems and, of the greatest concern, fruit. For the best outcome, fruit tree diseases must be identified and treated by highly trained technicians at the appropriate time for the best outcome. Our fruit tree treatments follow a protocol developed by several leading universities, utilizing varying products and the minimum number of treatments required to facilitate a productive harvest.

Needle Cast Diseases
Needle cast has become a major tree disease resulting in severe and lasting damage to many varieties of evergreen trees. Caused by several species of fungi, these diseases target Colorado blue spruce (Piceapungens), white spruce (P. glauca), white fir (Abiesconcolor), several species of pine (Pinus spp.), hemlock (Tsuga), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii) and cedar (Cedrus). Wet spring seasons with mild temperatures are favorable to the growth and spread of these tree diseases. Symptoms may first appear on lower, interior branches, where needles will look purple to yellow before browning and dying. Needle cast symptoms will gradually progress from the base of the tree towards the crown and from the interior spread to outer stems. Younger, smaller trees are at higher risk of mortality from these diseases.

Proper watering, nutrition and pruning can help prevent infection. However, once infected needle cast may be managed through treatments including removal of dead or dying limbs and/or appropriate application of technical materials.

Evergreens keep their foliage during the winter. The foliage and bark disscoloratin, are signs that the weather conditons have injured the trees.

Sphaeropsis Tip Blight
Sphaeropsis tip blight, formerly known as Diplodia, is a fungal tree disease most commonly affecting Austrian pines (Pinusnigra), Scotch pine (P. sylvestris), ponderosa pine (P. ponderosa) and mugo pine (P. mugo). This tree disease will occur on well-established plantings and those already under stress.

Symptoms include stunting and browning of current year’s growth, which after several consecutive years will stunt the tree’s entire growth. Initially identified on lower branches, the blight will make its way progressively towards the crown. Proper care and maintenance can help prevent infection. Once afflicted, disease treatments can include removal of dead or dying limbs and/or appropriate application of technical materials.

Sycamore Anthracnose Diseases

Sycamore anthracnose is a common tree disease that results in extensive defoliation, shoot dieback, and twig death of your sycamore trees. This can happen especially when extended periods of cool and wet weather occur in the spring. Since it’s very difficult to control through conventional disease treatments, we use a trunk injection that will prevent infection of your sycamore specimens for 3 years.
